2002 Beekeeping Institute

June 7-8, 2002

Young Harris College
Young Harris, Georgia

Young Harris College and the University of Georgia are proudly offering the Eleventh Annual Beekeeping Institute, June 7-8, 2002. Since its inception in 1992, the Institute has grown to become the largest and most comprehensive beekeeping educational event in the Southeast, offering classes and workshops for beekeepers at all levels of experience.

The Eleventh Beekeeping Institute will inaugurate a Master Beekeeper program, the first of its kind in Georgia. Modeled after the successful Master Beekeeper programs in surrounding states, the YHC/UGA program will offer beekeepers training and certification at grades beginning with Certified Beekeeper and leading to Journeyman, Master and Master Craftsman.

Returning to the instructors= roster by popular demand is Mr. Michael Young of the University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Senior Judge of the British National Honey Show and quite simply the world=s premier connoisseur and judge of honey. Mr. Young will be repeating his popular lectures and workshops on hive products, as well as offering judges= certification examination on behalf of the Welsh Bee Keepers Association. We are also hosting Georgia native son, Jamie Ellis, who is a PhD student at Rhodes University, South Africa and rapidly becoming recognized as a world authority on small hive beetles. Rounding out the lineup are Ann Harman, longstanding leader in the Eastern Apicultural Society, as well as the bee research staff of the University of Georgia and other seasoned local instructors B 12 in all.

The Institute uses a 2-track system B one track for beginners and another for experienced beekeepers. Facility limitations force us to cap enrollment to 150. A limited enrollment ensures a more comfortable learning environment for everyone, but makes pre-registration mandatory. If you cannot pre-register, please call us first to make sure there=s space before you make the trip.

We strongly urge students to participate in the Institute Honey Show, owing to the presence of our distinguished guest Mr. Young, who will serve as Judge. Students will never have a chance to have their honey receive a more authoritative examination and constructive critique. Cash prizes will be given to the winners.

All awards and certifications will be announced at the Closing Convocation on Saturday.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2002 Beekeeping Institute!

He has served as President of the Ulster Beekeepers Association. In his spare time Michael produces art in the medium of encaustic beeswax.

GADGETS & GIZMOS TABLE
The Gadgets and Gizmos Table will be set up on Friday and Saturday. If you have invented a gadget or procedure that simplifies your bee operation, bring it along and share with the group. Please display with each item a card with your name, address, phone number, and a brief explanation or photo that describes the item's function. First and second place winners will be recognized at the Awards presentations Saturday evening.

MASTER BEEKEEPER PROGRAM
In this inaugural year of the YHC/UGA Master Beekeeper Program we will be offering examination for the Certified Beekeeper grade only. This grade is pre-requisite for all subsequent grades B Journeyman, Master and Master Craftsman; thus we encourage anyone interested in the Program to complete this grade as soon as possible. Once a pool of Certified Beekeepers is in place we will be free to add curriculum for subsequent grades. The program will be presented in detail at the orientation lectures Friday morning.

WELSH BEE KEEPERS ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATION

Mr. Michael Young will be offering the honey judges' certification exam of the Welsh Bee Keepers Association. Applicants must have previous experience at judging honey in competitive shows. Successful candidates will be fully recognized as qualified judges by the Welsh Association, and even if one never has the opportunity to judge a Welsh honey show this certification will remain a prestigious demonstration of one's qualifications to judge on this side of the Atlantic. The oral exam will be offered Friday evening. Registrants who sign up for the exam in sufficient time will receive the study materials via email attachment in Word.

HONEY SHOW
We strongly encourage students to participate in the Honey Show and take advantage of the opportunity to have their honey critiqued by our distinguished Judge Mr. Michael Young. Although educational in nature, this competitive show is designed to encourage excellence in the production and marketing of bee hive products. Cash prizes will be awarded on the following basis: First place winners by class ($50), second place ($40), third place ($30), Best of Show ($100). For 2002 we are announcing a new show class, the "Black Jar"category. The competitor's extracted honey will be presented to the judge in, literally, a black jar (provided by the Institute), and the judge's sole criterion for this class will be flavor.
